It’s the holiday season! Welcome back to the blog ladies and gents! The past twelve months have flown by, right? It might sound cliché, but it really does just seem like yesterday that we were seeing in the 2019 New Year. Now 2020 is just around the corner. A whole new decade awaits! And soon enough it will be that time to create new resolutions. New Year’s resolutions are overrated. And we all know a small margin stick with them and achieve these resolutions. In fact, we’d rather skip working. We’d rather have a good time with Netflix or HBO with a snuggly warm cup of hot chocolate in our hands. We’d rather take the easy way out in hopes of instant gratification. However, in those times, I like to remind myself that we’re all human. We like to be lazy. It’s fine. But it certainly isn’t fine when you procrastinate all the time. So, why not start new resolutions now! IT’S ABOUT TIME! So you’ve been GYSTING for a while now, or if you haven’t, hopefully you plan to start soon. REALLY soon. Remember...you have to stop procrastinating! But who am I to pressure you? In this post I’ll give you an insider’s guide to avoiding the most common mistakes people make when GYSTING. And hopefully THAT will get you going and nip your procrastination at the bud...now that you know what to do! The following statements are the truth and nothing but the truth. These statements will not apply to everyone, because we’re not all the same, although we all share in the same humanity. We do not make the same mistakes, but knowing what to avoid will give provide us with the path of “what not to do.” KEEP THESE IN MIND WHEN CREATING YOUR RESOLUTIONS
1. There are 24 hours in a day and this is a constant we can never change. Whenever we say that we “too much to do” and simply “don’t have enough time,” we are blaming time, instead of ourselves for the lack of better self management. And, wether we like it or not, time will continue to go on and on and on. Of course there is too much to do! Of course there is not enough time! Get used to it. Not checking off all your the tasks on your to-do list is not a FAILURE. After all, the tasks we need to complete will probably not fit into the 24 hours in the day that we do have. Try putting all your to do lists together and add up the time needed to complete ALL the tasks, I bet they well exceed the 1440 minutes in a day. You have to be able to prioritize the few tasks that you HAVE to get done. And what about everything else? Well, they have to be completed in other pockets of time, that with mindful attention, you will be able to recognize. Solutions: prioritizing, using your pockets of free time in the day, and open acknowledgement that this can happen no matter how hard you might try 2. Sometimes we find ourselves in need of GYSTING and know that we have to reset our lives, but we don’t know where to start. We often think that a task is so small and insignificant that there is NO WAY that we’ll forget to do it. But that is exactly why we forget them! So, how do we avoid this? My suggestion is by taking your planner, or a dedicated notebook, everywhere and writing down everything you plan to/need to accomplish at ALL TIMES. The more items on your list, the more time you are going to spend going over that list, and re-evaluating that list to appropriate the time you will need to reset your life completely. Having that big ol’ list will give you an idea of what you have to do and those little things that you should be reminding your self not to forget about. Solutions: planner, brain dump section of a notebook, making sure you don’t forget a thought, idea, or deadline, but also accepting the fact that you can make mistakes and that you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself when you do. 3. Not only are your GYST to-do lists crazy long because, I mean, we obviously have to do quite a few things when we are trying to get our lives together and reset, but they are also incomplete. How? Think about it. Have you included enough time to sleep, eat, exercise, or simply relax? What about calling your mom, texting a friend, or simply rebooting? And everything? There is no dedicated time for possible delays or setbacks. That’s when you have to take it upon yourself to appropriate more time than you would think you need an including breaks, because those are important to how well you accomplish a task. Solutions: using block scheduling to set aside time for breaks and relaxation, learning to adapt to delays and know when to scrap something you don’t HAVE to do 4. As a recovering perfectionist, I have come to learn the negative effects this can have on one’s self management. (More on that in Episode 5) Yet, acknowledging that you will not get it perfect every single time can help you actually start, without the fear of messing up or recreating an exact replica of what you have decked out in your mind. You can try cutting corners. I know how horrible this sounds, but sometimes those last few tweaks are usually discernible to you and ONLY YOU! So try using your time a little more efficiently. Ask yourself: Do I need to add this/ that? Do I have time for it? Will it better my project not only aesthetically? Solutions: just start, learn from the mistakes you made in the past and use that to better the results in the end, appropriate more time if you really want to make that project/ commitment of yours truly STAND OUT. So that’s it for Episode 2 of this series. Have you experienced some sort of revelation and are so intrigued that you want to start GYSTING anytime soon? Have any plans to reset your life now that 2020 is creeping on us? Want the time management skills to avoid all the above mentioned? Be sure to stick around for Episode 3 of the GYST series!
